In the world of JD Power, "quality," or more precisely "initial quality," is the relative absence of problems. Most of us would say that's a component of quality, but it doesn't define it. Way back when I was at JD Power, we recognized this and created the APEAL study to capture owners' enthusiasm for their vehicles. This is designed to look at another key component of quality. This year -- as in many prior years -- the APEAL study has found that Porsche and MINI owners really love their cars. The APEAL Study also points out other vehicles that are neither sales nor critical successes that are very much loved by their owners, perhaps in the same manner that Charlie Brown loves his Christmas tree. This year, Hyundai Santa Cruz (which I have reviewed positively, by the way) and Jaguar F-Pace represent that phenomenon.

“Operability” is a more accurate descriptor than “Quality” when it comes to the user interface and customer satisfaction. The weak link is the point-of-sale. During purchase of the last 4 new vehicles I’ve owned, the car dealer salesperson spent zero to minimal time demonstrating/explaining the cockpit controls. This step is vital in establishing “quality” for an OEM yet it’s left up to the dealer. And it will only get more time-consuming due to the increased complexity of the UX subsystems.
